Over the course of UWP 101V at UC Davis, I created and maintained a public blog called The Null Hypothesis: Finding Significance, which explored algorithmic bias and AI’s intersection with creativity, fairness, and everyday life. Having to write weekly blog posts pushed me to translate technical knowledge from my CS and Statistics background into languages accessible to a general audience. This was a skill I had never deliberately practiced before, but also one that I now find myself enjoying. These are the three posts that capture the blog’s arc most clearly and the three that I am the proudest of:
- The Null Hypothesis: Finding Significance: this sets up the blog’s purpose and my voice as a writer. It was the starting point of my journey.
- The Black Box of Algorithmic Bias: this blog digs through the technical and ethical stakes of biased systems through the Gender Shades research and Algorithmic of Oppression.
- The Songs were Fake; The Streams were Real: this connects the themes I have been exploring to something culturally immediate, which is the viral rise of AI-generated songs and what it means for real artists and listeners who often cannot tell the difference.
